You need a project
“You need a project”
Let that project be YOU, seriously.
Let yourself be a project.
Many years ago now, I was feeling so lost, without purpose and really, like my compass had lost its north: a friend of mine said “maybe you need a project”.
Something of your own.
And of course, since I was rather lost my first thought was
“so what, a pottery class?
Pick up horse riding?
… start playing golf..?”
He said “no Charlotte, I think you need something a little more life changing than horse riding”. I think you need something more long term.
What I found, was a psychologist.
(or in the right terminology, an Analyst because she was a Jungian Psycho analyst).
And during my time with Anne, I was a work in progress. Sometimes it was going well and sometimes it wasn’t. Sometimes I felt like I needed more time with her and other times we would just sit and I was wondering why I spent money on staring out her window, more fantasising about what her life looked like outside of the consulting room.
But one thing that it never changed from was that it was my project. My investment in myself.
It took me from point A to point B in my life. A new chapter began when I started with her and another when I stopped as well.
Approaching yourself like a project in motion allows us to stop trying to reach the finish line.
It takes some of the pressure away, I promise.
Because what is a project?
Something in progress. Not done, not finished but going in the right direction.
This is why I decided to call my online courses PROJECTS.
How does it feel when we have a project to do?
It feels good.
It feels fulfilling.
It feels like purpose.
Remember being a child and having some project in school?
Or maybe the promise of a pet if you would take responsibility for it?
It felt warm.
It felt like meaning.
This is what a project gives us.
So can you allow yourself to be that project?
This is what I put behind the words “invest in yourself”.
We feel so good about investing in the renovation of our house. We feel so good about having invested in our education. We feel good about the hair-do.
It’s because we prioritised it, focused on it and came out on the other side with this feeling of completion. We have seen it through. We made it and look how proud we are of our accomplishment.
The reason you need to see yourself as a project in this sense, is because your wellbeing is the base for how good you will feel about any other thing you decide to invest in.
So unless you start with yourself, the feeling of completion will never last elsewhere.
Now, the thing is that you need to know what you are working with.
Like any project you initiate, you start with an observation. An audit. A benchmark.
So that means, you need to observe yourself.
How do you do that?
There is only one way: you need to stop the disturbance going on around you so that you can become clear on what belongs to you and what does not belong to you.
We have been defined so many times by the people around us that we usually take that for WHO we are. But actually, that is not true.
You are not your name for instance.
You are not your profession.
You are not a girl/boy friend, spouse or friend.
It’s like the song “A horse with no name” states it:
“In the desert, you can’t remember your name, cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain”
Now, I know that we can’t always go into the desert that easily.
For sure these days, even going into any nature away from home seems impossible.
But you can create this for yourself. Even if you live in a small apartment in a big city.
Because, really, the space you need is very small.
I would say, all you need is the space of a yoga mat (and you don’t even have to practice any yoga on it). You will need to set of a time in the day where you can be undisturbed for just a little while.
The main thing is that it needs to be regular.
That is how the project comes alive. You know it from anything you have worked on. If you leave in a drawer for two weeks, when you open that drawer you kind of need to start all over again because you have probably forgotten where you left it.
So with yourself, you need to INVEST in the project daily.
There is no time like the present. You will never truly be done and you can never get it wrong.
So start today and let me guide you through it in order to more easily find your north again. Join the project.
